Cherished Memories of Alex Rust, S/V Bubbles. R.I.P.

Happy memories, Alex (26) and Elliot (21) celebrate their birthdays with a dock party in Tahiti, June 2010
The World Cruising community has lost one of it's most colourful, magnetic personalities.

This morning we heard terribly sad news from Alex Rust's mother Sylvia.  Alex, S/V Bubbles, was found dead in his sleep May 28th in a guesthouse in the Hindu Varanasi region of Northern India.

Alex was more than a cruiser and world adventurer.  It will be up to those closest to him to tell his life story as Alex was never one to talk about himself and his good deeds.  I'm sure we will hear more of his giving nature following his untimely death.

The Rust family has announced memorial services on what would have been Alex's 29th birthday, June 14 2013 in his hometown of Seymour, Indiana.  June 15 marks the one year anniversary of Alex's homecoming following his circumnavigation of the globe.

Robert, Owen, Elliot and I are just some of the many, many people who shared amazing adventures with Captain Alex and his brother Joe.   Our sympathies go to Alex's family and his close friends.  May he rest in peace.

  1. Thanks Bristol Rose for writing such a nice article about Alex. He will be greatly missed. The time we all spent together in Tahiti was such a great experience that I will never forget.
    God Bless,
    Joe

  3. Joe we are deeply saddened by your loss. Alex seemed to work a kind of magic on everyone he met so that every possibility was revealed to them and fear and reservation became mere words. We all had so many laughs with Alex as the ringleader. Your Banana Race flag run through the streets of Bora Bora was classic Bubbles, sweet memories. May all the magical memories shared with your brother Alex continue to wrap around your heart and help to console you in time. He gave so much, a true leader. We send our love to you, your mom and family.

  4. I am so sad to hear of his passing - I met him before his start at Nanny Cay and followed him around the world - he touched so many lives and shared such wonderful experiences. He was so funny the first days with Bubbles...there was SO MUCH STUFF on the boat and he was across the dock from mine - youd hear "OH WOW" and the like every once in a while as he found some new treasure...Sail On Alex

  5. He chose well for a circumnavigation didn't he. Alex really loved his boat, as sailors tend to do.

  6. I still remember the first time we met Alex in Nuka Hiva. He an his crew sailed past us on anchor and dropped their hook just feet away from ours and before it had hit bottom, they were off on the dink to explore the jungle like cartoon characters climbing tree and cliffs.

Alex seemed to live like he knew each day was his last.

  7. What a powerful, exciting story. Long live characters such as Alex Rust. People who bring so much more into the world than they had at the start.
